‘Working in the Global Minerals Sector’

René Sterk is an alumnus of the VU and has worked in the minerals sector for 20 years, based out of New Zealand. At the moment, Rene is a director at RSC mining .  Through his work with RSC, he has worked in or travelled to more than 25 countries, worked in many commodities (including gold, copper, base metals, C, REE, Li, mineral sands, seabed nodules, and others), and has had the privilege to have been exposed to pretty much every weird and wonderful geological setting or deposit style you can find. René will provide an overview of his journey and experiences after graduating from the VU with a structural geology degree, to establishing RSC as a globally recognised mineral industry consulting company. Rene will talk about the career pathways in the resources industry; how to pick a good employer, the rewards and the downsides of the work. The workshop will be delivered in Dutch/English.

Rene will answer questions like:
– What university courses are important? Maths, computer programming, petrology, etc?
– Is a MSc or PhD important or will a BSc do?
– Where does my degree compare in the global employment world?
– What kind of work would I be doing?
– What career progression pathways are there in this field?
– I am excited about the Energy Transition space; how can I get into that and what do I need to know to get there?
– How do I grow my network and how do I improve my CV to position myself well?
– Can I do this work remotely at some point and can I work from Europe or do I have to travel and live overseas?

There’ll be plenty of time for questions!
